The last decade has seen a renewed interest in the EU hierarchy concerning the relationship between Europe and the countries of the Asia and Pacific region. This interest necessarily brings up the question of the motivation behind EU trade initiatives. What are the primary motivating factors behind EU policy toward Asian/Pacific countries? Is it self interest or does EU concern spring mainly from moral and ethical concerns?
In order to answer this question, an examination of specific EU policies, not surprisingly, shows that while there is an element of self interest in the EU policy, as these instruments serve to connect the EU with a potentially huge market, these policies also show a good deal of altruistic intention as the EU seems to be intent facilitating development in these countries, economically and politically.
