Discussion
The first work is entitled Juárez/El Paso (Boxcar) and is by James Drake. It was done during the period 1986-88 and is a large work, measuring 69 x 110 x 30 in. (Drake). The drawing is charcoal on paper mounted on steel frame with mixed media (coal, railroad spikes, crowbar) (Drake). The drawing itself is mounted on the wall and underneath it, a pile of coal with railroad spike and a crowbar is heaped on the floor.
The first reaction one might have is that it’s a depiction of the railroad cars used to transport the Jews to concentration camps throughout Europe, and the coal on the floor represents the human ashes from the ovens.
