...examination of slavery is a very powerful subject that is seen from many different perspectives. Even when active slavery is not taking place, such as seen in times of simple colonization, there are powerful issues concerning culture and oppression. In Olaudah Equianos work, The Interesting Narrative.., we are given a first hand look at what is believed to be the first of many slave narratives, with this one concerning Europe and Africa during the beginning of the 19th century. With Achebes novel Things Fall Apart we are offered a fictional, through incredibly realistic, look at Nigerian existence at the beginning of the 20th century when the issues were not slavery so much as they were colonization. In the following paper we examine the two works as they relate to issues concerning Africans and Europeans from two different time periods.
