I traveled from Florida to Antarctica, where I learned about the culture and history of the Polar Regions and saw first hand the unique nature of this landscape. This experience was one of the most significant of my high school years and gave me the opportunity to understand firsthand the interconnected nature of the world's ecosystem and the need for greater awareness about issues like sustainability.
Being chosen to participate in the People to People Student Ambassador Organization was a great honor in itself. This program was first set up in the early 1960s under the direction of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who believed that a greater understanding of the cultures of the world would be valuable for American citizens. By visiting different cultures and experiencing different communities, President Eisenhower believed that Americans could gain a greater understanding of the commonality that exists between seemingly different societies.
