McCabe, March 1998 Many Westerners still think of marriage in third-world countries as something that is both primitive and filled with rituals and in some respects it is a valid opinion; in other respects, it is not. The fact is that any custom that is not held by one's own culture is considered strange, primitive, ritualistic, or just plain weird but that is only because the members of each culture are familiar with only their own ways. Marriages in Africa, for instance, are based upon a number of variables which include but are not limited to: the religious beliefs of the families; the cultural practices of that particular segment of the country and continent; the societal pressures present in the region; the geographic region as well as whether it is in a remote or urban area.
