Deliberate cruelty to animals is very difficult to understand; it seems that the only possible answer is that the human is sick. Animals, especially domestic animals, are completely dependent on their human companions for food, shelter and love, and when those things are withheld, the animal suffers. When deliberate cruelty is added to the neglect, the situation becomes horrific.
Morally, deliberate cruelty to animals is found repugnant by a majority of humans, such that it has been suggested that it should be drawn into the realm of criminological inquiry as it has importance on multiple levels (Vollum, Buffington-Vollum and Longmire 209).
