While most allergy sufferers understand they have to avoid dust and pollen, or refrain from eating certain foods, it's also possible that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can cause allergic reactions (Vartan, 2006). Genetically modified food is produced when genes from one plant or animal are inserted into another; the question arises whether someone allergic to the inserted gene would be allergic to the modified food (Vartan, 2006). That is, if a GMO tomato includes a fish gene, and a person is allergic to fish, will they also be allergic to the tomato? (Vartan, 2006).
