Valley Song is a “lyrical parable” set in a “fertile, mountain-ringed valley in the Karoo.” Considered to be “coloreds” under the apartheid code, the play features three characters: the Author, Abraam Jonkers and his granddaughter Veronica. The time is the present and a stage direction indicates that the role of the Author and Abraam Jonkers should be played by the same actor; however, the play primarily focuses on Veronica and her efforts to carve a life for herself in the new South Africa that differs from the past.
