Rita is the main character and is initially pretty narrow minded. She is of the opinion that is she can increase her intelligence she will be able to change her class distinction and thus better her life. She is looking to be set free through learning more and becoming worldlier. She became a hairstylist in an effort to try to promote herself from lower class to middle class, but she still is not satisfied. Rita wants to become more than middle class and thinks that taking a college course will help her.
