Margaret Mead was not afraid to speak her mind; in this essay she asks a very important question: "Is war a biological necessity, a sociological inevitability, or just a bad invention" (Mead, 1940). Mead says that those who espouse the first view "endow man with such pugnacious instincts that some outlet in aggressive behaviour is necessary if man is to reach full human stature" (Mead, 1940). That is, man is by nature so warlike that he has to make war if he is to reach his full potential.
