Even those of Asian heritage who were born here and who can trace three to five generations back to American soil are often asked “what Asian country do you come from?” One way to prove that many Asian Americans have long roots in the United States is to examine the poetry and art that was created in response to experiences at Angel Island, which was a “holding station” for Asian immigrants (particularly Chinese immigrants) during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
