But then they do approximately the same thing by collecting together a series of essays, from varying points of view, that hope to give students some feeling for Native cultures. Their approach, given their introductory statement, seems ironic to say the least.
They have gathered together accounts, some contemporary, some historical, some Indians, others by whites, and by presenting them as a unit, allow the reader to see, perhaps for the first time, the depth and complexity of Native American culture. Part of the problem with any attempt to study "Indians" is that no such monolithic construct exists (Davis and Van Tine). There are numerous tribes with their own beliefs and ways of doing things; there is nothing that we can identify with any certainty and say, "that's what it means to be Indian." This diversity...
