It was only in 2002 that women first voted and were able to stand for election in Bahrain (Wright, 2006, Fenn, 2003). In these elections 40 seats were being contested by a total of 174 candidatesluding 8 women (Wright, 2006). This may be seen as a major step forward in women’s rights, but it is also worth noting that in this first election although 52% of all voters were women, no women won seats (Wright, 2006). However, the government remains committed to establishing and increasing women’s rights (Anonymous, 2007).
