As this suggests, Toronto has a problem with youth gang generated violence (Frum, 2006). While the ethnic origin and demographics of Toronto’s youth gangs is not known precisely, there are estimates that youth of Jamaican extraction may make up as much as 80 percent of the membership (Frum, 2006). The following examination of social issue focuses specifically on Toronto, the problem; theoretical speculation on the relationship between gang membership and deviant behavior and what is being done.
The Problem
2005 was a bad year for gang violence in Ontario, as the rate for gang-related homicides rose to 107, which was 35 murders higher than the 2004 total (Dauvergne and Li, 2006).
