Introduction
Actors Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney were famous for the so-called "show" types of movies. These are the ones in which the young adults would get together, faces alive with excitement, and decide to put on a play. One would get the curtains, one the costumes, someone would step up to direct and -- voila! -- the show would be born.
Many entrepreneurs approach starting a business in much the same way. They have an idea, and in all fairness, a very good idea. They have friends and relatives enthusiastically suggesting they should quit their day jobs to go into business for themselves. Flush with all of these endorsements, the would-be entrepreneur sinks his or her life savings into the store or business, only to find and learn, sometimes painfully, that he/she doesn't know the first thing about starting, or running a business. Typically, this is when the small business owner sadly has to close the doors and say goodbye to the prospect of running one's own business.
Clearly, there's more to starting a business -- especially a clothing store -- than simply getting the inventory in, hanging up the sign, and praying customers will come. It takes time, money and effort --...
