The fact that our forefathers were focused on the right to disagree with governmental officials and the right to practice their chosen religion when they included this "Right" in the Bill of Rights is an issue for another essay. What we have today is an overabundance of material that parents, teachers, and special interest groups fight against in their efforts to protect children from influences that may lead to inappropriate behaviors and/or values that are contrary to those that are socially accepted. The fact that so much of this material is so easily accessed by children and youth spurs groups and parents to demand specific books be banned from libraries, especially school libraries in an effort to protect children and youth from questionable or undesirable material. No one can question a parent's right to restrict their own children from exposure to material they oppose but does that mean they have the right to have books banned from school libraries?
