Chief Joseph led the Nimipu people (a name meaning "We People" that was quickly corrupted into "Nez Perce" by the French) during one of the most difficult times they ever faced, a time when the Nez Perce had been taken to their knees by the U.S. government. Not only were the circumstances leading up to this time in history lengthy and complex, so too was Chief Joseph's reaction to those circumstances.
Under Chief Joseph's leadership the Nez Perce made a phenomenal 1500 mile journey across what was considered impassable terrain. Unfortunately, Chief Joseph and his people were ultimately forced to surrender. Their fight had been long and diligent, however, and it is a fight that is still remembered to this day.
