According to the 2003 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Kentucky ranked as having the highest percentage of adult smokers (30.8 percent) (State-specific prevalence, 2004). Furthermore, the incidence of smoking was highest for both men and women in Kentucky (33.8 percent, men; 28.1 percent women) (State-specific prevalence, 2004). Additionally, this problem also affects pediatric health in that it is estimated that between 20 to 50 percent of adult smokers live with children in their households and that the majority of these smokers continue to smoke indoors, according to the CDC, despite the known dangers of second-hand smoke (SHS) (Sheahan and Free, 2005). These statistics indicate the severity of this community health issue within Kentucky and the need for nursing intervention and teaching strategies.
