Jerry Caldwell, IBM's director of marketing operations for education systems, showed his genius for understatement when he remarked, "Over the next decade, schools will experience a transformation and encounter unprecedented and formidable problems... The future of computers in education and the future of the computer-educated will remain inextricably linked" (Milliman, 1990, p. 60). During a 1990 IBM-commissioned survey of elementary and secondary teachers, it was revealed that computer usage as a learning tool was supported by a resounding 87 percent (Milliman, 1990, p. 60). Furthermore, they were already being used in two-thirds of their classrooms, and were reaping impressive benefits, such as reducing illiteracy, according to 82 percent of the respondents. In addition, the survey revealed that computers in the classroom were responsible for encouraging student self -confidence (87 percent), promoting individual creativity (86 percent), and markedly improving student motivation (82 percent) (Milliman, 1990, p. 60).
