...Proper Creativity in the Classroom Teacher creativity and innovation in the classroom, particularly in the Elementary school, is unfortunately rare. What so often happens is that teachers get locked into a curriculum which is supported by the other grade teachers and administrators. Also tying the hands of the competent teacher are rules and regulations so that a great amount of time is put into nonteaching activities which merely follow protocol. Thus, a noncreative environment is implemented under the presumption that such rules will allow teachers to maintain orderly classrooms. Unfortunately, with order, routine and predictability comes boredom and is the antithesis of the creative life. Unfortunately, many teachers in America have opted for secure routines with curriculums that provide little or no differentiation for class members (Smith, 1986 cited in Udvari-Solner, 1996). If teachers want to be creative and express individuality, they must in many instances rage against the machine. When teachers are able to stimulate creativity, children will flourish.
