...so-called “first czar,” Peter the Great, might appear to be worlds apart from the causes of revolution in 1917 that ended the rule of monarchal czars for good and instituted the socialist policies of communism for years to come. However, on closer examination, there is a direct link between Czar Peter – whom many considered almost as tyrannical as the Soviet leaders would prove to be – and the eventual rise of the Soviet Union. Many of the reforms and policies that Peter implemented (some experts say forced) on the Russian population during the late 17th and early 18th centuries ultimately were the cause for unrest and revolution that toppled Russia’s czarist government early 20th century, bringing in communist rule that would last for more than half a century.
