...responses to terrorism have been vast and varied. There was, at least at first, a vigilance. Licenses were checked. People are thrown off planes simply because they were frightening other passengers. Little attention was paid to rights, with the exception of those unfairly targeted because they happened to be of Middle Eastern descent. The anti-terrorism response to the 9/11 attacks was different than what happened in the past, both militarily and within the American criminal justice system.
Prior to 9/11, the United States did very little to effect change. Although there had been a few attacks previously—one even in the World Trade Center—there was little done in response. Certainly, there was no military action to speak of prior to 9/11. Since the 2001 terrorist attacks however, the United States responded with both military action and changes in law. The military action started out as a campaign to get the terrorists, who as George Bush explained, took down the buildings. He stood at Ground Zero, in the rubble, shortly...
