We begin with the title, which uses the definite "the," not the general "a" as we might expect. This indicates that we are going to be looking into one specific playroom, not playrooms in general. And what a room it is!
We are first introduced to Lucy who has a "family of dolls," which seems quite normal and cheerful. But the second line tells us that this is not normal at all, because Lucy is busy scraping an emery board over the face of the Mother doll, disfiguring it (Gwynn). This can either be construed as indicative of Lucy's hatred of her mother, or, if we consider the Freudian explanation, it shows us Lucy's desire to obliterate her mother so that she can take her place.
