...from David Fincher, director of Alien3, Seven, and The Game. It stars Edward Norton as a young man who works behind a desk and fills his private life with consumer goods. The film manipulates in profound ways, and it's not afraid, early on, to let you be aware of that. For one thing, we're immediately disoriented by the time frame. It starts near the end, jumps to the middle of part 1, and then kind of starts over. Our tale is told through narration. And other, more interesting, forms of manipulation occur. The Rest of the Story The young man is not content with where he is in life. And that boredom has somehow resulted in insomnia. In a bizarre attempt at curing himself of this malady, he starts attending support groups in the evenings, pretending to have more severe maladies. He finds that this phenomenon, of seeing others with much greater problems, provides him with temporary relief after such meetings, he sleeps like a baby. Enter Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), another support group "tourist" like Norton. Since the presence of another such "tourist" is distracting, they agree to split up...
