Greece is one of the world's great civilizations. Although not nearly as powerful or influential now as it once was, the splendid ruins that dot the landscape remind us of the past and of the culture that was really the foundation of all the Western cultures that followed. We still speak of the Golden Age of Greece; of the great philosophers such as Aristotle, Plato and Socrates; and of the idea of a democratic form of government. We owe our language to Greece; we go to see live theater in much the same format that the Greeks invented; and we are still moved and pleased by what is called "classical Greek" art. The Greeks have a heritage rich almost beyond measure.
Recent history hasn't been as kind. Greece is a Mediterranean country, largely a peninsula; it borders Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria...
