Home Rule was key to Irish independence and, for the most part was resisted by the British who sought to keep the Irish in a subordinate position to the English. This movement was founded in 1872 by Isaac Butt; however the major leader was a Parliamentarian named Charles Stewart Parnell. Parnell was an Irish nationalist who won support from the Prime Minister, William E. Gladstone. Gladstone devoted the latter part of his career to the attempt to secure Home Rule for Ireland. (Magnus, 1996). He believed that his main mission was to deliver Ireland from British misrule. From 1886 to 1893, Gladstone tried unsuccessfully to pass Home Rule measures; however, it was not passed into law by Parliament until after World War I. Unfortunately, by then Home Rule had been superseded by the demand for independence.
