...pain. A Schedule II narcotic, hydrocodone is an opioid. Like its cousins, opium, heroin, morphine, codeine, and oxycodone; hydrocodone is derived from the opium poppy (Tunnell, 2005). It act on the opioid receptors of the brain and the spinal cord as well as on tissue itself (Tunnell, 2005). Oxycodone is found as a major component of several brand-name drugs like Lortab, Lorcet, and Vicodin. Hydrocodone is not only one of the most effective pain medications in the pharmaceutical arsenal, it is also one of the most higly abused drugs in the nation (Sipkoff, 2004).
Schedule II drugs include those drugs that, although they are highly addictive, are approved for medical usage under the Controlled Substances Act (Tunnell, 2005). In its pure form hydrocodone is a Schedule II drug.
