Immigration has been a hot button subject for many years, with illegal immigrants sneaking over the Mexican border in the United States in hopes of a better life. There are those who believe that Mexican immigrants are necessary for the workforce, as they help with jobs that others might not take. There has been a great deal of controversy about this statement, but there have been enough studies demonstrating that, for the most part, immigrants are in the United States for one goal – to make money. Then they return home.
This is the case in the construction industry – and when times were booming, and labor hard to find, “imported labor” was the best bet. But what is the best type of comprehensive plan to help immigrants come over from Mexico to help out with the construction industry?
What is clear is that what is going on now simply isn’t working. Back in 2005, Tamar Jacoby pointed out that despite a build-up of forces on America’s southwest border, there hasn’t been a corresponding number of illegal immigrants coming over the border. Furthermore, not a single terrorist suspect has been apprehended on the U.S-Mexico border since September 11, 2001 (Jacoby, 2004)....
