The theme of this particular poem is childhood and the simplistic, and often breathless, enjoyment of children. In the first stanza he states, in Just-/ spring/ when the world is mud-/ luscious the little/ lame baloonman/ whistles far and wee (Cummings 1-6). In this we see lines which offer us simplicity, and unique phrases that make us imagine the magical world of childhood when things did not need to make sense.
