Unfortunately those societies are often socioculturally stratified when it comes to the manner that indigenous peoples are accepted within them. There are examples, however, in both India and in North America in which the same indigenous peoples that occupy the lowest social echelon have banded together to make significant changes in the contemporary urban societies in which they live.
Many are surprised to learn that in India a caste system is still very much in effect.
