Nigeria in the 1960’s was not a good place to live. Odili Samalu is a teacher who has personal connections to the man, Chief Nanga, who currently rules the country. Odili watches as a person he once respected becomes quite corrupt and instead of being a ‘man of the people’ becomes a tyrant and puts himself and his own interests ahead of his people. This is obvious early on when Nanga fires the finance minister, whose only sin was to advise Nanga that he’d better cut coffee prices in order to keep inflation low. Because it is an election year, Nanga fires the finance minister instead. Then, Nanga sends his secret police in to destroy the finance minister’s house and car.
