Whether or not NAFTA is a success seems to depend on who's describing it. There are a number of venomous rants against it that call it a dismal failure, but the U.S. government provides a summary from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative that indicates it's a success. NAFTA was designed to create a "free trade" area among the three nations that would facilitate the movement of goods, services and monetary investment in the region. According to the USTR, NAFTA has "increased exports and investment flows" with the result that all three economies have grown substantially in the period 1993-2003 (NAFTA: a decade of success, 2004).
