Monkey King in some way is representative of most human beings. When he finds his name and that of the other monkeys in a book, he crosses it out in the hopes that they will all gain immortality. For the most part, Monkey is happy but then he cries and says: "But the time will come when I shall grow old and weak. Yama, King of Death, is secretly waiting to destroy me. Is there no way by which, instead of being born again on earth, I might live forever amongst the people of the sky?" (Ch'eng-en 14). Monkey begins his quest with fear. Here, Monkey is truly concerned about his own personal salvation, as well as the fate of others. Yet, as the story goes on, there are many obstacles presented.
