...Barnett, - August, 2000 In January of 1999, a nineteen-year-old college student, Shawn Fanning, dropped out of Northeastern University after the first semester of his freshman year in order to finish a software program that would allow music enthusiasts to swap their favorite tunes online. He called his program "Napster," and it's phenomenal popularity and growth has sparked nothing less then a music revolution. Currently, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), along with the five major recording companies, is endeavoring to shut down the Napster website through the courts. However, even if the RIAA, et al, succeed, there is no doubt that the future of this industry will be seriously altered by the creation of Napster and similar programs. An examination of the developments thus far will illustrate how radically things have been changed by this new technology.
