1. Introduction
It is estimated that since the 1980's more than 1 million babies have been born where mothers were exposure to cocaine during pregnancy (Mathias, 2003; 11). With this number of births any impacts, physical, developmental or mental, that result from the exposure making this an issue of public interest and an area where understanding and policies need to be developed.
Research into this area has been limited as exposure to cocaine is often accompanied by exposure to other factors, such as tobacco and alcohol that can also impact the invetro and later development of the babies exposed.
