Slaves were brought to the North American continent against their will and it was done in such a way as to ruffle the feathers of politicians. There were politicians and people on either side, but slavery persisted for a time. Down the road, the sales would be freed and the flag in America could fly high as it represented a people that was totally free. Of course, that is not the whole story of slavery. That is only perhaps an American story. Slavery is an old institution, and persists to this day.
