Historically, mental health therapies have relied upon the assumptions of individualistic centered treatments which were developed in the 19th century for white middle class clients. Recently, mental health practitioners have been trying to develop guidelines which will help in the treatment of clients from socially oppressive situations. Studies involving populations of African Americans, Asians and women have found that individualistic approaches should be abandoned for treatments which include total assessment of all factors (ecosystems) which influence the lives of the clients and which have led to their oppression. These factors must be assessed and changed to attain a successful treatment.
