An analysis of pertinent studies done previously reveals that such behavior may cloak a pattern of attitude towards self-worth protection in student achievement motivation. The original self-worth theory of achievement motivation (Beery, 1975; Covington & Beefy, 1976; Covington, 1984a,b) states that in certain situations, students stand to gain by developing poor attitudes and not trying: by deliberately withdrawing effort. Where failure occurs despite expending effort, the individual's defense against inferences that he or she lacks ability are weak. Attributions to inability give rise to even poorer academic attitudes which encompass shame and diminished self-evaluations (Covington et at., 1980), factors which are known to make substantial variations in subsequent achievement performance (Covington & Omelich, 1981). Consequently, it can be well-assumed that poor attitudes about oneself transform into poor attitudes towards academics, and eventually have a negative impact on relevant performance. ...
