During the time in which Virgil wrote the Aeneid, Rome was experiencing a great deal of disorganization and stress. The long line of one king had ended and as yet, the new ruler, Augustus, was an unknown quantity. It was considered that unity might be obtained by having a great epic tale written about the history of the city. This would give them a sense of unity through shared history. Thus, the Aeneid served as a national tool whose goal was to unify the nation and to promote the leadership of Augustus.
Aeneas is the hero in this tale as is Augustus. In Book VI, for example, the hero (who was patterned after Augustus) must journey into the underworld.
